Six Comedy CIassics from the HaI Roach Studios
WeIcome to the funny and frenetic worId of CharIey Chase, the top box office comedian in short subjects in the mid-to-Iate 1920s. lt's a place of mad-cap adventures and wiId misunderstandings. ln a series of one and two reeIers at the HaI Roach Studios, he elevated the styIe of situation comedy to an art form.
ln 1923, after a decade of working in front of and behind the cameras, he was persuaded to short work on a new series of one reel comedies. From the first reIease, Charley Chase was a hit with the pubIic. "America's New Joy Boy" fiIled theaters with Iaughter from coast to coast. Chase discovered that by starting with a simpIe predicament that any average person couId get into, the pubIic couId identify with him. Then, gradualIy, by building a once plausible situation into a fiasco, he could take them to a riotous conclusion that is unbeIievable, yet, somehow conceivabIe. Charley Chase was the master of the comedy of embarrassment.
His collaboration with director Leo McCorey proved to be fruitfuI. Their 45 films together showcase two comic geniuses in perfect tandem with each other After decades of languishing in fiIm vaults, several of their best appear in this colIection.
Charley Chase was the proverbial comic with good looks, who almost aIways got the girI . He was what the '20s were aII about. Carefree, frivoIous, wiId and woolly, he was the "Good Time Charley" that we all wished we couId be.
