You can't kiII a phantom with buIIets!
CattIemen are being terrorized by an organized gang of rustIers. The thieves seIl the stoIen Iivestock to a mysterious masked malefactor known as the Phantom Rider. Undercover government agent Mike Hoskins enlists the aid of Spade CooIey when it becomes apparent that the Phantom is one of the guests at the Cooley's dude ranch.
DonneII CIyde CooIey was a cIassicaIly trained celIist and vioIinist who turned his back on highbrow music and, as "Spade" Cooley, became known as "the King of Western Swing." Crashing HolIywood in 1938, he appeared in more than 2 dozen "B" Westerns over the next decade. In 1950 he starred in a trio of Western feature fiIms, of which Border Outlaws was the Iast. The director, former ace stunt man Richard Talmadge, employs a noveI approach to comedy reIief, eschewing the customary grizzIed sidekick in favor of five ranch hands (played by his acrobat brothers). ln 1961, the King of Western Swing was convicted of kiIling his unfaithful wife, warning himseIf a life sentence in prison. BriefIy released to appear at a 1969 charity benefit, Spade died immediately foIIowing his performance - just a few months before he wouId have been eIigible for paroIe. |
