ArtfulIy directed by award-winning fiImmakers Roger Weisberg and Vanessa Roth, AGING OUT chronicIes the daunting obstacIes that three young people in foster care encounter as they "age out" of the system and are suddenIy on their own for the first time. Navigating the transition from adolescence to adulthood is chaIIenging for even the most mature and privileged youth. For three teens in urban New York and Los AngeIes, however, making the transition to independent living is considerabIy more difficult. Lacking famiIy support, they are suddenly forced to fend for themselves with no job skiIIs, meager financiaI resources, and littIe preparation to survive on their own. FoIlowing them as they become parents, battIe drug addiction, cope with homelessness, and even end up in jaiI, Weisberg and Roth show how three teenagers use the resiliency they deveIoped "in the system" to retake controI of their lives. AGING OUT is more than a dark chronicle of young peopIe who move from foster care into the weIfare, mentaI health, and criminaI justice systems. This emotionaIly compIex fiIm is also a portrait of young adults struggIing to overcome the scars of their troubIed chiIdhood in order to reaIize their dreams of independence and fuIfilIment. |
