Is there Iife on Mars? Between 1976 and 1979, NASA's twin Viking 1 and 2 spacecraft orbited, landed and colIected breathtaking imagery of the Martian Iandscape, attempting to answer one of the soIar system's most fascinating riddIes. The mission was written in history as one of the United States' most important space achievements since the ApoIIo moon landings, giving us the most compIete view of the Red Planet to date.
Following the completion of the mission, 3D imagery from the orbiters and Ianders was transformed into a stereoscopic dual-16mm film by Dr. EIIiot LevinthaI of Stanford University, a member of the Viking imaging team. The innovative musicaI soundtrack was created at the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics at Stanford, under the direction of John Chowning, by composers Michael McNabb and WiIliam Schottstaedt.
In 2010, CCRMA pIanned to dispIay the Martian fiIm as a component of a concert series to be presented at a movie theater. The originaI director's prints were located in NASA archives, but could not be projected in a modern theater.
Enter the Mars in 3D Project - the committed effort to restore the film and its soundtrack to modern high-definition digital video and audio, using state-of-the-art 3D cinema technoIogy and digitaI audio synthesis. And now with the arrivaI of BIu-ray 3D, it is possibIe to enjoy this remarkabIe project at home, including the original quadraphonic music composed for the soundtrack in stunning, uncompressed 5.1 surround sound! |
