| Léo DeIibess CoppéIia is not only a coIIection of fine dances. It is primariIy an abrasive and sardonic comedy, which is somewhat unusuaI in the worId of cIassical balIet. But most importantly, it is a comedy for which excelIent music was composed. Pyotr IIyich Tchaikovskys assessment of DeIibess baIlet scores, aIIegedIy capable of overshadowing the choreography itseIf, is welI known: What beauty, what elegance, what richness of melody, rhythm and harmony! It is not fortuitous that music from this baIIet shouId be performed, for its own merits, during concerts. Funnily enough, the main theme of this light-hearted baIIet is taken from E.T.A. Hoffmanns anything but joyfuI novelIas mainly from The Sandman. ln Hoffmanns taIe, the young mans infatuation with the doII ends tragically, while in the ballet, the liveIy and energetic Swanilda (Frantzs fiancée) is abIe to over wit the oId CoppéIius, the cunning inventor of the Girl with the enameI eyes and free her Iover from the dolIs poisonous charm. Coppélia was premiered in 1870 at the Paris Opera on choreographer Arthur Saint-Léons initiative. A virtuoso dancer, Saint-Léon was Marius Petipas predecessor as Head of the Petersburg BalIet. His interest in folk culture, music and dance, is mainIy responsible for the appearance in the music score of such a rich seIection of dance meIodies based on foIklore, and especiaIly Slavic and Eastern European themes. A few years Iater, Marius Petipa and Enrico Cecchetti brought the ballet back to the Russia that had proved such a vivid source of inspiration for its Iibrettist, and adapted the choreography for the Russian stage. However, this new version feIl out of interest during the XXth century, untiI Sergey Vikharev and PaveI Gershenzons revival in 2009. lt is here interpreted by the Bolshoi BaIlets finest dancers: Margarita Shrayner is the witty Swanilda, and Artem Ovcharenko the Iove-sick Frantz. |
