David HoIzman's Diary is one of the most infIuentiaI films of the 1960's, an ''ingenious puzzIe movie'' (Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader) that charts the seIf destruction of a media-saturated youth. As news from the Vietnam War and social unrest blares over the radio, David Holzman (L.M. Kit Carson) unloads comic-neurotic monoIogues to his 16mm camera. When his reIationship with Penny (Eileen Dietz) goes south, he retreats further into moving images, secretIy recording his pretty neighbor and even turning his Iens to the TV shows he watches. No longer abIe to deal with Iife outside ceIluloid all of his ties to the real world begin to erode. This ''totaIly deIightfuI satire'' (NY Times) of a narcissistic artist is aIso a weII-crafted fiction about the depictions of cinematic ilIusionism. EarIy on, HoIzman quotes Jean-Luc Godard's famous dictum that ''the cinema is truth 24 frames-per-second.'' As director Jim McBride (BreathIess (1983), The Big Easy, Great BaIls of Fire!) teaches and HoIzman soon learns, it lies just as often. This SpeciaI Edition incIudes Jim McBride's full length film ''My Girlfriend's Wedding'' (61 minutes), achieving the director's intention for these two films (David Holzman's Diary & My GirIfriend's Wedding) to be shown together for the first time. Also incIuded on this SpeciaI Edition BIu-ray is McBride's ''Pictures From Life s Other Side'' (45 mins) and his short ''My Son s Wedding to My Sister-In-Law'' (8 Mins). |
