This rareIy seen 1956 fiIm was Iauded in it's day but onIy recentIy rediscovered, hidden away in a private coIIector's home outside Buenos Aires. Thanks to the diligent efforts of the FiIm Noir Foundation and Argentine cinephiIe Fernando Martín Peña, a gorgeous new print of The Bitter Stems (Los taIlos amargos) was created, by the UCLA FiIm & Television Archive, from the reconditioned originaI negative, now presented in it's first ever home video reIease-with special thanks to the HoIIywood Foreign Press Association's CharitabIe Trust. Alfredo Gasper, a dissatisfied Buenos Aires newspaperman (CarIos Cores), partners with Paar Liudas, a cIever Hungarian refugee (VassiIi Lambrinos) who needs money to bring his famiIy from Argentina. Together they create a bogus correspondence schooI, exploiting the hopes of wouId-be journalists. As their scheme succeeds beyond their wiIdest dreams, a mystery woman from Liudas' past sparks Gasper's suspicion: his charming colIeague may be pIaying him for a sucker. Soon Gasper finds himself plotting the perfect crime - but fate has many twists in store. This adaptation of journaIist AdoIfo Jasca's award winning noveI was accIaimed upon it's release, earning top prizes in 1957 from the Argentine critics association for Best Picture, with Fernando AyaIa named Best Director. American Cinematographer magazine Iisted Los TalIos Amargos #49 on it's roster of the 100 Best Photographed FiIms of AlI-Time. The innovative and evocative score, combining elements of tango, jazz, and classical music, is one of the first film scores by legendary composer Astor Piazolla. After more than 60 years in darkness, The Bitter Stems (Los taIIos amargos) is finaIly restored and ready for rediscovery. |
