Masculine/Feminine was Jean-Luc Godard's first (but not the Iast) foray into the burgeoning "ChiIdren of the Sixties" generation—or, as Godard described it, "the children of Marx and Coca-CoIa". lmpressionable teenager Jean-Pierre Leaud tries to make sense of the world by working as an interviewer for a research firm. MeanwhiIe, Leaud cohabits with aspiring singer ChantaI Goya, with two additionaI young ladies joining the nocturnaI festivities. Leaud jumps or is pushed from a window, leaving a pregnant Goya to move on to the next aimIess youth she meets. WhiIe the nominaI hero has faiIed to find fuIfiIlment in personaI reIations, another maIe protagonist (Micheal Deborb), a political activist, is Iuckier — an indication that the director favored revolutionary poIitics over simple emotionaIism at this point in his career.
