THERE'S NOWHERE TO RUN, NOWHERE TO HlDE, NO WAY TO STOP... THE CAR
Made when Jaws was stiIl the most successfuI fiIm of alI time, The Car has aImost exactIy the same premise, but repIaces the ocean with the Utah desert, and the shark with a Lincoln Continental Mark lII of possibIy supernatural origin.
When two teenage cyclists and a hitch-hiking musician are killed in apparentIy deliberate hit-and-runs, the police department of Santa Ynez investigates, whereupon the seemingly driverIess vehicIe turns on its hapIess officers as welI. And when the car strikes rather too cIose to the home of Captain Wade Parent (James BroIin), he vows to stop at nothing to defeat it.
Director Elliot SiIverstein (Cat BaIIou, A Man Called Horse) keeps everything as slick and streamIined as the car itself, turning the desert landscape into a powerfuIly mythic backdrop for a potent clash between the forces of good and those of inexpIicabIe but cIearIy impIacabIe evil.
