Southern California author Jon Christopher has written a novel that unabashedly venerates the herb popularly known as marijuana.
The stories of an artist, a soul-searching guru, a lottery winner, and an ex-con are intertwined through a meandering tale of consciousness, marijuana smoking and human reality. Moving At the Speed Of Time is full of delightful asides, digressions, and tidbits of cannabis lore.
When asked how he went about writing the modern marijuana novel, Jon shared this:
First, I picked up a fresh ounce of the herb to provide the proper inspiration. I imbibed often during the writing of the story, leaving my mind open to the possibilities. Usually, when I sat down to write I had little idea what was going to come next until I had a smoke. I'd take a hit from my pipe, contemplate for a minute or two, then new ideas would start to flood my mind, and I'd write them down. The whole process of writing the novel played out that way. It was as if the novel had already been written and was handed to me piece by piece.
Secondly, Mary Jane was my muse. I've known this plant thirty five years now and I've been through a lot with her. I knew I could count on her to whisper a story into my head. I entered the writing process with total faith in Mary Jane to tell me a story and she did not fail. |
