An electric automobile is an automobile or car that is propelled by one electric motor or more. It makes use of electrical energy stored in batteries or another energy storage device. Electric vehicles were popular in the late 19th century and early 20th century, until improvements in internal combustion engine technology and mass production of cheaper gasoline vehicles, which led to a fall in the use of electric drive vehicles. In the 1970s and 1980s, the energy crises brought an interest in electric cars. However, the interest was temporary and those cars did not reach mass marketing.
