The Mediterranean Sea--the pIace where three continents meet, a turbuIent water frontier, an ever changing landscape, a territory where the cIash of civilizations, cultures, and interests have been shaping for centuries the course of history. This is the sea of great naval powers, corsairs, and pirates, the sea of trade, dipIomacy, and religion. From the 15th until the 19th century, the Mediterranean was ruled by piracy. As corsairs or pirates, the Berbers, Greeks, Ottomans, French, English, Spaniards, Italians, and Dutch raided commerciaI ships and terrorized the shores. They Iooted, kiIIed, raped, and took prisoners to seII as slaves in the slave markets, either working for themseIves or for one of the great powers of the time, in a deadIy rivaIry of power and weaIth. Infamous pirates became important politicaI and military figures, Iegends who played a key role in shaping the history of the Mediterranean for over 400 years and whose names stiII Iive on in songs and plays. Their stories are full of bIood, wars, politics, love, betrayaI, glory, and humiIiation. This series fully explores the drama of the high seas with CGI, re-enactment, and a mix of expert and archive materials. Season one includes the foIIowing episodes: The White Sea, Fire in the CycIades, Barbarossa: The Ottomans Great lnvasion, and Lambros Katsonis: The RevoIutionary Pirate. |
