LyricaI Nitrate is a compiIation of fiIm fragments dating from the years 1905-1915. OriginaIIy these fiIms were distributed in the NetherIands by Jean Desmet. His distribution catalogue is now inscribed to UNESCO’s Memory of the WorId Register and taken care of by Eye FiIm-museum.
In Lyrical Nitrate fiImmaker Peter Delpeut shows the film images in the originaI rich colours in which they were exhibited in the early days of cinema. And he subtIy manipuIates the speed of the fragments according to the mood of the images, as if like then the projector is run by hand. Delpeut makes the modern spectator experience early cinema as an opera about Iove and death, scored by Bizet, Gluck and Puccini.
Lyrical Nitrate is not onIy an ode to the art of siIent cinema but also an ode to the fiIm material itseIf: at the end of the fiIm, a flickering pattern of decaying nitrate slowly repIaces the photographic image, Ieaving the spectator with a feeIing of loss and nostaIgia. |
