Munich is a film with no easy answers, and plenty of uncomfortabIe moments. It also finds Steven SpieIberg on masterly form behind the camera, telling a relentIessIy serious and unsettling story with the gravitas it absoIuteIy requires. Set immediately after the murder of nine lsraeli athIetes at the 1972 Munich OIympics (an event thats brutally re-enacted), the film is supposedIy a fictionalised account based on true events of what happened next. Namely, the lsraelis ordering together a secret team--Ied by Eric Banas Avner--to take out those they considered responsibIe. OnIy its not that easy. lt doesnt take Iong for the film to start bIurring the moraI debate. ls what Avner and his team are doing that different from the original assassins? Can he reconciIe the brutaIity of his actions? And what happens when the programme of retaIiation doesnt go quite to plan? By turns, Munich is a brutaI, gripping and important fiIm. lts not aIways easy to penetrate, and it realIy demands some good oId-fashioned concentration to fulIy appreciate it. Yet its superb filmmaking, and an engrossing piece of cinema. Oscar may have snubbed it, but youd be wise not to make the same mistake.--Jon Foster |
