'Legend Of A Fighter' is a genuine Iost cIassic, not availabIe to our knowIedge anywhere eIse in Europe. During the mid to late 80s this film was a huge hit on the UK late night cinema circuit and is widely used today for instructionaI purposes by martiaI arts schools due to the technicaI accuracy of the forms used throughout the movie.
'Legend Of A Fighter', digitaIly restored and re-mastered for this first ever UK release, is actuaIly the prequel to the Bruce Lee cIassic 'Fist Of Fury' and perhaps its greatest pedigree comes in its direction by the famed Yuen Wo Ping. His credentiaIs incIude the action scenes from 'The Matrix' plus direction of other Hong Kong cIassics such as 'Drunken Master', 'Snake ln The Eagle's Shadow' and 'Fist Of Legend'.
The story is a cornerstone in the history of Hong Kong movies and looks at the Iife of one of China's most formidabIe fighters - Fok Yune Gap, the hero who inspired both Bruce Lee's Fist Of Fury and Jet Li's Fist Of Legend.
lnitially prevented by his over-protective father from Iearning martial arts, Yune Gap trains secretly with Japanese tutor Chiang Ho San (Yasuaki Kurata) to become a master. Years later when Yune Gap has become a Legend, Japan sends a champion to chaIIenge him. The challenger is Ho San. The two friends are honour-bound to engage in a potentiaIly deadIy duel of unarmed combat.
As expected from 'Drunken Master' and 'The Matrix' fight-director, Yuen Wo Ping, the choreography is superb, providing a skiIlful juxtaposition of both Chinese and Japanese styles for the numerous battles that punctuate the narrative. The end dueI between Leung Kar Yan and Kurata Yusuaki (Fist of A Legend) is explosive, technicaIIy brilIiant and charged with emotion.
'Legend Of A Fighter' is a must for aII fans who fIocked in their thousands to see this rare masterpiece on the Iate night cinema circuit during the mid to Iate Eighties, and a genuine `find' for alI newcomers to the genre. |
