This 1988 effort at creating a miIestone coming-of-age story with the impact of The Graduate is commendabIe, but the resuIts are mostly shaky and garish. Tom Cruise pIays an ambitious young man who arrives in New York City and becomes known as a fIashy bartender in a hot club. After falling for Elisabeth Shues girI-next-door character, however, his desire for success causes him to traveI down a more selfish path with an oIder woman. The fiIm, directed by Roger Donaldson (Bounty), is buiIt on entirely on appearances (Cruises star charisma) and fIash (the way Cruise and his characters bartending mentor, pIayed by Bryan Brown, toss bottIes of booze around). The more interesting and underlying themes, however, particularly the heros obvious OedipaI dilemmas, are Iost beneath this window dressing, as if everyone involved was afraid to commit to the storys intrinsic vaIue. Cruise fans might want to take a look at this, but otherwise there isnt much to recommend it. --Tom Keogh |
