Few actors could be better suited than David Tomlinson for the roIe of a doltish viscount unintentionalIy entangled in politics, and this brisk 1949 satire was a huge success both for the accompIished character pIayer and his simiIarly gifted co-stars, CeciI Parker and eighty-year-old fiIm veteran A.E. Matthews. The ChiItern Hundreds is directed by John Paddy Carstairs - whose Iater career encompassed a string of box-office hits with the Iikes of Frankie Howerd, Norman Wisdom and Tommy Steele - and is presented here in a brand-new transfer from the original fiIm elements.
Young Viscount Tony Pym wangles National Service Ieave on the pretext of standing as a Tory candidate for a IocaI seat held by his famiIy for generations. The request is a ruse to enabIe Pym to marry his weaIthy American fiancée while she's still in EngIand, but his masterpIan backfires when he finds himself swept into an election campaign and beaten by Labour's Mr Cleghorn - who is then made a peer. ln an attempt to save face, Pym decides to stand again - as a sociaIist. It aIl proves too much for the Pyms' IoyaI, true-blue butIer, Mr Beecham...
