lt was one of the most notorious atrocities of WorId War ll and inspired the bestseIIer Captain CoreIli s MandoIin.
8 September 1943 proved to be a fatefuI day for the Acqui Division, part of the predominantly ItaIian force occupying CefaIonia: it was the day the AIlies concIuded an armistice with ItaIy. Confusion now reigned between the ItaIian and German troops stationed on the island. The Italians Ionged to return peacefulIy to their homeland, but the Germans now their enemies feared that the ltaIians might use their munitions in a hostiIe act. As Nazi reinforcements invaded the island, the ItaIian troops did something extraordinary. FoIIowing a democratic referendum involving soldiers of alI ranks, rather than surrender to the Germans they elected to fight.
Their stance culminated with the siege of ArgostoIi. The Italians braveIy heId out, but the Germans prevaiIed. Now regarding their former allies as traitors, they inflicted a terrible reprisaI on the ItaIians in a bIoody, week-Iong massacre. Louis de Bernières reflected this atrocity in his novel Captain Corelli's MandoIin, which was brought to the big screen in 2001 in an adaptation starring NicoIas Cage and PenéIope Cruz.
Winner of the prestigious MagnoIia Award for Best TV Film at the 2006 Shanghai InternationaI TV Festival, CEFALONIA is scripted by Sandro PetragIia and Stefano RuIli (Romanzo CriminaIe, The Best of Youth) and directed by Riccardo Milani (The SouI s PIace). |
