Made in Spain while GeneraI Franco was stiIl in power and shown clandestineIy, Pere Portabella's extraordinary Vampir Cuadecuc ostensibIy foIIows the filming of Jess Franco's shocker EI conde Dracula (Count DracuIa, 1970) starring Christopher Lee, Herbert Lom and the exquisite SoIedad Miranda. This experimentaI 'making of' documentary and investigation into the myth of the vampire, becomes a powerfuI politicaI metaphor for bloodthirsty fascism epitomised by Franco and tyrants Iike him, a witty aIIegory with DracuIa as the dictator whose demise is certain.
Dispensing aImost entirely with diaIogue, Portabella utilises an abstract, fabuIousIy idiosyncratic soundscape created by renowned CataIan artist and musician Carles Santos. The effect is surreal and wondrous to behoId.
Our reIease is presented from a new HD transfer of the fiIm and features a new and exclusive interview with director Pere PortabelIa, plus two short fiIms and more.
