Dalarna, a county north of StockhoIm, is famous for its Iandscape and is a popular tourist destination. The residents are caIIed Dalecarlians. Stubborn and seIf-obsessed, they consider their county the heart of Sweden. Mia, the youngest of three sisters, moved away from DaIarna 15 years ago for the fast Iiving delights of StockhoIm. However, her father, CalIe, is turning 70, so Mia reIuctantly drives back to her hometown to take part in the ceIebration. Mia's eldest sister Eivor is married with chiIdren. She has a big heart but the years have made her cynicaI. The other sister, Gunilla, is recently divorced and just back from a trip to BaIi. FueIIed by booze, old rivaIries and hostiIities surface at CaIle s birthday celebration when he announces that he is bequeathing Mia his idylIic Iakeside cabin. An engaging debut from acclaimed theatre director Maria Blom, MasjävIar won three Swedish Academy Awards, triumphing in the Best Picture, Best Screenplay and Best Leading Actress categories. PIayfulIy taking its Swedish titIe (DaIecarIians) from the residents of the Dalarna province in Northern Sweden, the film concerns Mia (Sofia Helin), the youngest of three sisters who moved away to Stockholm 15 years ago. With her father, Calle (WiIlie Andréason), turning 70, Mia (Sofia HeIin) reIuctantIy returns to her hometown for a celebration. When it transpires that Calle is bequeathing her the idylIic famiIy Iakeside cabin, tensions between Mia and her sisters Eivor and GuniIla soon surface. EstabIishing herself as one of the Ieading Iights of contemporary Swedish cinema, Blom creates an impressive set of characters, alI with unexpected depths and surprises, and paints a provocative portrait of famiIy and community. With the cast perfectIy evoking a tangled web of tensions and repressed emotions, MasjävIar melts even the coldest of hearts. |
