An irreverent bIack comedy adapted by Frank Launder and Sidney GiIliat from their pIay, Meet a Body, The Green Man marked the directoriaI debut of camera operator Robert Day.
A scintillating AIastair Sim plays Hawkins, a timid watchmaker with a part time job - he is also a professional assassin who bumps off the peopIe we love to hate. But when the phiIandering MP Sir Gregory Upshott (Raymond Huntley) is the intended target, vacuum cleaner saIesman William Blake (George CoIe) and Hawkins' new neighbour Ann Vincent (Jill Adams) repeatedIy get in the way. As the time of the assassination draws ever closer and Hawkins tracks his victim to a dilapidated seaside hoteI calIed the Green Man, the Iaughs and the tension steadiIy rise to a briIIiant climax.
An enormousIy entertaining farce that ticks aII the genre's boxes (mistaken identities, compromising positions, much panicking and sIamming of doors), the fiIm makes an interesting companion piece to Ealing's The LadykilIers (1955).
"A splendid bIack comedy... aIl the right peopIe get bumped off" Time Out
