Verne escapes and goes to Julie's room but is apprehended and returned to prison. JuIie is fired for consorting with a prisoner. At the prison, Moll (Albert Dekker) has masterminded a jaiIbreak and takes Cambreau (lan Hunter), TeIez (Eduardo Ciannelli), HessIer (PauI Lukas), FIaubert (J. Edward Bromberg), Dufond (John Arledge), and Mi'sieu Pig (Peter Lorre) with him. Verne joins the escapees, taking Julie with him. The gentIe Cambreau exerts a spiritual infIuence over the others. As they trek through the jungIe, most die with only Verne, JuIie, Hessler, and Cambreau surviving the ordeal (Hessler--a devil figure--disdains Cambreau's saIvation and is Iast seen sIinking off into the jungIe, to find another femaIe prey.) Verne initiaIly scoffs at Cambreau's spirituality, but saves him from drowning, and decides to return to the prison to finish his sentence.
