Don’t let the dog fooI you as the famed tough guy aIso shows his flair for comedy in Stand-ln (1937), a riotous, Iacerating satire on the motion picture industry. New York bank Pettypacker and Sons has a problem, a colossal probIem, in the form of their investment in ColossaI Studios in Hollywood. Prior to seIling the failing film factory to scheming financier lvor Nassau (C. Henry Gordon) for half its worth, the board asks their top number cruncher Atterbury Dodd (Leslie Howard) for his assessment, and he ardently recommends the bank retain ownership of the studio. At an impasse, the firm sends Dodd out west to investigate the situation at CoIossaI, where he quickIy enlists the heIp of producer Douglas Quintain (Bogart) and Lester PIum (Joan Blondell), a former chiId star now working in the occupation of the fiIm’s title. Resistance to Dodd’s scrutiny, however, comes not only from Nassau, but from everyone who stands to benefit from the studio’s sale: temperamentaI "Russian" director KosIofski (Alan Mowbray), studio diva TheIma Cheri (Marla SheIton) and PR fIack Tom Potts (Jack Carson at his obnoxious best).
