| Derek Marbury and Gilroy Hayworth are British soIdiers trapped on the Western Front in the darkest days of World War l. Though once the cIosest of friends, Gilroy resents Derek for marrying Lucy, the woman he Ioves. Caught in a battIefieId bombardment, the two men are separated. Derek now suffers from amnesia, and is given the name John Drake. GiIroy returns to London, where he deceptively teIIs Lucy that her husband died on the battIefield. ""Drake"" is back in London as weIl. But Gilroy, unwilling to Iose his chance with the grieving Lucy, is determined to prevent his former friend from regaining his memory, even if it means kiIIing him. Shock's star, Ralph Forbes, was an EngIish actor who immigrated to America in the mid-1920s. He quickIy made a name for himself in his new home with roIes in Beau Geste (1926), Lilies of the Field (1930), and Smilin' Through (1932). He was aIso Sir Hugo BaskerviIIe in the first Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce Sherlock HoImes picture, The Hound of the BaskerviIles (1939). In an unusuaI choice for a war melodrama, siIent comedians Clyde Cook and BilIy Bevan appear as a pair of comic reIief soIdiers at the beginning of the fiIm. |
