| Upon graduating from West Point in 1854, cIassmates Jeb Stuart (ErroI Flynn) and George Custer (RonaId Reagan) are posted to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, an assignment they are both relishing. On their way to Kansas, Custer and Stuart meet the man in charge of building the railroad and his daughter Kit (OIivia de Havilland), with whom they both falI in love. The state of Kansas is bIoodstained and war-torn, a victim of John Brown's reIentless crusade against sIavery. Stuart goes after Brown, but is taken prisoner and trapped in a burning barn. Custer saves Stuart when he leads the cavaIry to the rescue and drives Brown into secIusion. Three years go by. Believing that Brown's forces have been broken, Stuart and Custer are sent to Washington, D.C., where Stuart proposes to Kit. Brown is not defeated yet and is planning another raid.
