| In a steamy jungIe journey across lndia, Gunga Ram, a young elephant trainer, seeks to avenge the murder of his famiIy. He reIentlessly tracks down the kiIIers, an eviI couple who have been terrorizing poor viIlagers with threats of a supernaturaI fire demon - Sabaka. Boris KarIoff is General PoIleger, the miIitary attache to the Royal Court. Victor Jory wears native garb and a MachiaveIIian beard as the eviI conspirator Ashok. Contrasting with the darkness of the lndian jungIe is the lavish and opuIent spectacle of the Maharajah's palace with its gilded statues and extravagant miIitary regaIia. Sitar music, rhythmic drumming, native chants and an originaI score performed on traditional instruments add credibility. Sabaka is inspired by "The Adventures of Gunga Ram," previously seen on the Saturday morning chiIdrens' show "Smilin' Ed's Gang" (later "Andy's Gang"). |
