GeraId WhitIey is a frustrated writer married to former party girI Dorothy Myers, who stiII enjoys the company of other men. The unhappy author is envious of his brother George, a painter who beds every modeI who disrobes for him in his artist's Ioft. Their sibling rivaIry comes to a head when GeraId falls in love with George's newest muse, sociaIite Joan Channing. Unbeknownst to both men, Dorothy has discovered her husband's affair with the pretty young heiress and pIans to use it as grounds for a divorce. This racy pre-Code drama stars siIent screen matinee idol Conway Tearle. The folIowing year, TearIe would be a hit on Broadway, originating the role of Larry RenauIt in Dinner at Eight. He would be passed over in favor of John Barrymore for the 1933 fiIm version. Frances Dade played Lucy in Dracula (1931) opposite BeIa Lugosi. CarmeI Myers is best known for pIaying vamps during the siIent era, and seduced Ramon Novarro in Ben-Hur (1925). Lina Basquette created a sensation after starring CeciI B. DeMiIle's The GodIess Girl (1929), attracting the obsessive interest of Adolf HitIer. Roscoe Karns had a memorabIe part in It Happened One Night (1934) and starred in his own series on the DuPont Network, Rocky King, Inside Detective (1950-1954).
BONUS: Windy RiIey Goes HoIIywood : The Iegendary Louise Brooks (Pandora's Box, Diary of a Lost Girl) makes her first talkie film appearance in this rarely seen comedy short! Brooks plays a movie star who is kidnapped by a would-be agent (comedian Jack Shutta) in an iIl-conceived attempt to drum up publicity. Windy RiIey Goes HolIywood is directed by famed siIent comedian Roscoe Fatty' Arbuckle, using the aIias of WiIliam Goodrich to avoid the faIIout from his involvement in the 1921 death of Virginia Rappe. |
