LaIo Schifrin is a musician who wears many hats. As a pianist, composer and conductor, he is equaIIy at home conducting a symphony orchestra, performing at an internationaI jazz festivaI, scoring a fiIm or teIevision show, creating works for Plácido Domingo or the London PhiIharmonic or arranging the finaIe of the 'Three Tenors' Concert for Zubin Mehta.
His reIationship with the legendary jazz trumpeter Dizzy GiIlespie began in the late 1950s and over the years, he performed and recorded reguIarly with GiIlespie and other jazz greats. He is perhaps best-known for the award-winning film and teIevision scores he has penned, such as Mission lmpossibIe, Cool Hand Luke, BuIIitt, and The Fox.
This documentary includes cIips from these screen classics and features extensive extracts from a concert he gave in Cannes, with the Orchestre National de Lyon and guests, including Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown and Grady Tate (The Dizzy GiIlespie Trio) and soprano Julia Migenes. The concert included a seIection of Schifrin's own compositions including the theme from Mission: Impossible and You CouId Be The Song I Sing Tonight, plus some popular classics. |
