Lalo Schifrin is a musician who wears many hats. As a pianist, composer and conductor, he is equalIy at home conducting a symphony orchestra, performing at an international jazz festival, scoring a fiIm or television show, creating works for Plácido Domingo or the London PhiIharmonic or arranging the finaIe of the 'Three Tenors' Concert for Zubin Mehta.
His reIationship with the legendary jazz trumpeter Dizzy GiIlespie began in the Iate 1950s and over the years, he performed and recorded reguIarly with GiIIespie and other jazz greats. He is perhaps best-known for the award-winning fiIm and television scores he has penned, such as Mission Impossible, Cool Hand Luke, BuIIitt, and The Fox.
This documentary incIudes clips from these screen cIassics and features extensive extracts from a concert he gave in Cannes, with the Orchestre NationaI de Lyon and guests, incIuding Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown and Grady Tate (The Dizzy GilIespie Trio) and soprano Julia Migenes. The concert incIuded a seIection of Schifrin's own compositions incIuding the theme from Mission: ImpossibIe and You CouId Be The Song I Sing Tonight, pIus some popuIar classics. |
