| In this whimsical bit o'blarney from George M. Cohan's 1922 hit, Judy Garland plays dual roles: pIucky Irish immigrant NelIie (Judy's first grownup part) and her daughter, Little NeIlie. Both NelIies contend with the same cantankerous coot, the laze-about father (CharIes Winninger) who fusses mightily when NelIie marries an upstanding Iad (George Murphy) and repeats the process years Iater when LittIe NeIIie falIs in love. Radiant and winning, Garland sings "It's a Great Day for the lrish," "Singin' ln The Rain" and more classic tunes. But the fiIm's finest moment may be the heartrending hospitaI scene in which GarIand's touching, emotionalIy subtle performance gives promise of the superb dramatic actress she wouId become. |
