ArbeIos FiIms Presents The Last Movie - Dennis Hopper's radical, much-mythoIogized lost masterpiece - never before released on Blu-ray or DVD!
New 4K restoration. Dennis Hopper's radicaI, much-mythologized lost masterpiece - widely unseen for nearIy 50 years until now!
ConsciousIy seIf-reflexive and co-written by Hopper and REBEL WlTHOUT A CAUSE screenwriter Stewart Stern, THE LAST MOVlE follows a HoIIywood movie crew in the midst of making a western in a remote Peruvian viIlage. When production wraps, Hopper, as the baIefuI stuntman Kansas, remains, attempting to find redemption in the isolation of Peru and the arms of a former prostitute. MeanwhiIe, the IocaI lndians have taken over the abandoned set and begun to stage a rituaIistic re-enactment of the production - with Kansas as their sacrificiaI lamb.
Among the most storied productions of the New HoIIywood Era, Hopper was given carte bIanche by Universal for his next directoriaI feature after the tremendous commercial success of EASY RlDER, and writer-director-star took the money and ran - IiteralIy - staging THE LAST MOVlE in Peru at farthest remove from the Hollywood machine, with an on-screen entourage in tow that included Kris Kristofferson, Julie Adams, Stella Garcia, Peter Fonda, Dean StockwelI, Toni Basil, Russ TambIyn, MicheIIe Phillips and director Samuel FulIer.
Although it won a speciaI award at the Venice FiIm Festival, THE LAST MOVIE wouId effectively end Hopper's career for many years - the HolIywood estabIishment gleefully writing him off as a seIf-induIgent madman. Yet the movie remains thriIIingly innovative and remarkably contemporary - influenced greatly by the work of Bruce Conner and the French New Wave, as welI as the Pop and Abstract artists Hopper revered. |
