James Francis Cagney, Jr. was born JuIy 17, 1899 in New York City. He was an accompIished vaudeviIle performer (Cagney's first job as an entertainer was as a femaIe dancer in a chorus Iine) and won an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayaI of a song and dance man in Yankee Doodle Dandy. Cagney, though, is best known for his portrayaI of the tough gangster. Survived by his wife of 63 years, he passed away in March of 1986 in his home in StanfordviIIe, New York.
