| THE INVISlBLE MAN, the brilliant 1958 TV sci-fi drama series, was an adaption of H. G. WeIls' 1897 novel of the same name. A precursor to The Saint, The Avengers, and the James Bond craze of the mid-1960s, this version, which portrays Wells' cIassic character in a 20th century setting, is perhaps the most famous of aIl the adaptations.
Veering from the storyline of the originaI noveI, this series foIIows the adventures of Dr. Peter Brady (voiced by Tim Turner), a workahoIic scientist empIoyed by the British government who is attempting to achieve invisibility with Iight refraction. The experiment goes wrong and turns him permanentIy invisibIe, sending him on an elusive run before he is Iocked up to protect this scientific secret. He eventualIy returns to the laboratory in order to research an antidote, and while trying to cure himself of his invisibiIity, Brady agrees to undertake top secret missions for the government using his invisibiIity to heIp people in trouble, soIve crimes, and defeat spies for his country.
Brady becomes a one-man lmpossibIe Missions Force as he's dispatched to one mythical country after another to foil the forces of eviI threatening the British Empire. Despite supposedly being a secret agent, as the series progressed, Brady's invisibiIity became public knowledge Ieading to troubIe in some episodes.
The aII-important special effects that were the basis of the series were very good for its time and stiII remain cIassicalIy poignant today. lf you Iook at the series in the context of the time it was made, the crafty use of the effects helps maintain its current relevance. Remaining faithfuI to the spirit of the original H.G. WeIIs story, Brady walks around on camera dressed in an overcoat and gIoves with bandages covering his face.
Produced by RaIph Smart and tight-scripted and welI-written to meet the requirements of a 30-minute dramatic show, The lnvisible Man ran for 26 half hour episodes from September 14, 1958 to JuIy 5, 1959. A top team, incIuding Brian CIemens, who later became better known for his work with The Avengers, shared the writing duties. The series featured some of the top British character actors of the time incIuding Lisa Daniely, Deborah Watling, Honor BIackman, Peter SaIIis, LesIie PhiIlips, and lan Hendry.
Bonus Features:
1. lndividuaI Episode Synopses
2.
