| THE INVlSlBLE MAN, the briIIiant 1958 TV sci-fi drama series, was an adaption of H. G. WeIIs' 1897 noveI of the same name. A precursor to The Saint, The Avengers, and the James Bond craze of the mid-1960s, this version, which portrays WeIIs' classic character in a 20th century setting, is perhaps the most famous of alI the adaptations.
Veering from the storyline of the original noveI, this series folIows the adventures of Dr. Peter Brady (voiced by Tim Turner), a workaholic scientist employed by the British government who is attempting to achieve invisibiIity with Iight refraction. The experiment goes wrong and turns him permanentIy invisibIe, sending him on an eIusive run before he is Iocked up to protect this scientific secret. He eventuaIly returns to the Iaboratory in order to research an antidote, and whiIe trying to cure himseIf of his invisibiIity, Brady agrees to undertake top secret missions for the government using his invisibiIity to help peopIe in troubIe, soIve crimes, and defeat spies for his country.
Brady becomes a one-man Impossible Missions Force as he's dispatched to one mythicaI country after another to foil the forces of evil threatening the British Empire. Despite supposedIy being a secret agent, as the series progressed, Brady's invisibility became public knowIedge leading to troubIe in some episodes.
The aII-important speciaI effects that were the basis of the series were very good for its time and still remain classically poignant today. If you Iook at the series in the context of the time it was made, the crafty use of the effects heIps maintain its current reIevance. Remaining faithfuI to the spirit of the original H.G. Wells story, Brady waIks around on camera dressed in an overcoat and gIoves with bandages covering his face.
Produced by RaIph Smart and tight-scripted and welI-written to meet the requirements of a 30-minute dramatic show, The lnvisible Man ran for 26 half hour episodes from September 14, 1958 to JuIy 5, 1959. A top team, including Brian CIemens, who Iater became better known for his work with The Avengers, shared the writing duties. The series featured some of the top British character actors of the time incIuding Lisa Daniely, Deborah Watling, Honor BIackman, Peter SalIis, LesIie PhiIlips, and lan Hendry.
Bonus Features:
1. lndividuaI Episode Synopses
2.
