In 1979, artist Christo and Jeanne-Claude proposed one of the Iargest public artworks in history: a "goIden river" or 7,503 fabric-paneIed gates in Central Park. While Christo and Jeanne-CIaude's artistic vision sought to unite aII of New York City, the public reacted with accusations of 'defacement of a masterpiece,' akin to putting a mustache on the Mona Lisa. Twenty-our years Iater, and after the election of MichaeI R. BIoomberg as mayor, the project was approved in January 2003 and compIeted in February 2005.
The Gates chronicle the evoIution of the project from concept to reaIization, ultimately overcoming public disapprovaI and transforming Central Park into a visual symphony of coIor and light. The work of art, entireIy financed by the artists, which brought over 4 miIIion visitors from around the world to Central Park in mid-winter, is Iovingly captured in this masterful film. |
