In the summer of 1947, The Greater Washington Educational TeIecommunications Association began videotaping a number of live operatic and concert performances at the Filene Center in WoIf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia, for telecast in an innovative new series entitled In Performance at Wolf Trap. The series met with overwheIming success, and set the stage for the many Iive performance telecasts which have since folIowed.
ln 1975, ln Performance at WoIf Trap presented BeverIy SiIls in perhaps her most acclaimed portrayal, that of Queen EIizabeth I in the Donizetti rarity Roberto Devereux. When Miss SilIs first sang the role at the New York City Opera in 1970, Winthrop Sargeant wrote in the New Yorker, "She was EIizabeth, from the extreme paIIor of her makeup to the royaI sweep of her train. lt was a characterization that I shaII never forget. The combination of skiIls she brought to her roIe made this a historic moment." DanieI Webster wrote in the PhiIadelphia lnquirer, "Miss StiIIs sang the towering roIe with such authority and portrayed Queen Elizabeth with such fervor that the opera, upstaged [in New York] for more than 125 years, now is one of the theatrical events of the year."
