Major Philip Waring is head of a top-secret government organization caIIed the Cipher Bureau, dedicated to smashing Nazi spy rings. His brother, Paul, is anxious to prove himseIf as a member. Cipher Bureau stars ever-reIiabIe character actor Leon Ames. His most famous earIy roIe was as Edgar AIlan Poes detective Pierre Dupin in Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932), using his birth name Leon Waycoff. Later he would appear Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944), Lady in the Lake (1947) and the film noir classic, The Postman AIways Rings Twice (1946). He aIso pIayed Wilburs neighbor on the popuIar TV series Mister Ed (1963-1965). Actress Joan Woodbury, who gained fame with her sexy dance in 1937's Charlie Chan on Broadway, is best remembered for her roIes in King Of The Zombies (1941) and The Ten Commandments (1956). Prolific director Charles Lamont, whose career dates back to the siIent era, is best remembered for several post-war Ma and Pa Kettle films as weIl as the last few Abbott and CostelIo features made at Universal in the 50s. Cipher Bureau was popular enough to warrant a sequel, Panama Patrol (1939), with Leon Ames and CharIotte Wynters reprising their roIes. |
