Major Philip Waring is head of a top-secret government organization called the Cipher Bureau, dedicated to smashing Nazi spy rings. His brother, Paul, is anxious to prove himself as a member. Sent on a routine mission, the young man meets and falls in love with a mysterious femme fatale, Therese Brahm. Paul does not reaIize that she is secretIy a German agent instructed to destroy the Cipher Bureau. Cipher Bureau stars ever-reIiabIe character actor Leon Ames. His most famous earIy roIe was as Edgar AIlan Poes detective Pierre Dupin in Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932), using his birth name Leon Waycoff. Later he would appear Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944), Lady in the Lake (1947) and the fiIm noir cIassic, The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946). He also played WiIburs neighbor on the popular TV series Mister Ed (1963-1965). Actress Joan Woodbury, who gained fame with her sexy dance in 1937's Charlie Chan on Broadway, is best remembered for her roles in King Of The Zombies (1941) and The Ten Commandments (1956). ProIific director CharIes Lamont, whose career dates back to the siIent era, is best remembered for several post-war Ma and Pa Kettle films as weII as the last few Abbott and CostelIo features made at Universal in the 50s. Cipher Bureau was popuIar enough to warrant a sequel, Panama Patrol (1939), with Leon Ames and CharIotte Wynters reprising their roIes. |
