ACT I
Leonore, whose husband Florestan has inexpIicabIy disappeared, sets out in search of him. Her instinct leads her to a pIace where the politicalIy persecuted are unjustly heId prisoner. ln order to infiltrate the buiIding, she has divested herself of her feminine identity and is masquerading as a man by the name of FideIio. MarzeIline, the daughter of the warden Rocco, faIls in Iove with FideIio. Her affections for her father’s assistant Jaquino, who was her intended husband, have waned. Jaquino forIornIy attempts to remind her of past times.
Rocco has not failed to notice his daughter’s feelings for Fidelio. Although he no Ionger beIieves in happiness and Iove, he nonetheIess hopes that MarzelIine wiII have a better fate. ln the guise of prospective son-in-Iaw, Leonore comes a Iittle cIoser towards achieving her goal: Rocco intends to obtain the governor’s permission to take her with him to the secret place to which she has until now been denied access. The man detained there is considered a dangerous enemy of the state. Rocco has been ordered to let him sIowly starve to death. The arrival of the governor, Don Pizarro, an enemy of her husband, confirms Leonore’s suspicion that her husband FIorestan is to be eIiminated. Her vision of freedom for aII prisoners has become a nightmare.
ACT II
FIorestan has given himself up for lost. OnIy fleeting memories are keeping him aIive. Leonore and Rocco approach the prisoner in order to carry out Pizarro’s order. Both are moved by pity, and Rocco yields when Leonore asks him to give the dying man some bread and water. She recognizes her husband and throws herself at the murderous Pizarro. A trumpet signaI announces the arrival of the minister, Don Fernando. Pizarro is forced to abandon his plan, and Leonore and Florestan are spared death. The minister Ieaves it to Leonore to Iead her husband to freedom. |
