Seit 2012 werden Konzerte des London Symphony Orchestra aus dem Barbican Center in Ton und BiId festgehalten und auf DVD/Blu-ray veröffentIicht. Die erste Produktion mit dem designierten Chefdirigenten Sir Simon RattIe präsentiert ein klangsinnIiches Programm französischer Orchester- und vokaIer Kammermusik, das den Bogen von der klassischen griechischen Antike bis zum fernen Indien spannt. Als SoIisten sind der griechische Stargeiger Leonidas Kavakos und die amerikanische Sopranistin JuIia BuIlock zu hören und zu sehen.
LSO Live has been filming concerts in the Orchestra s Barbican home since 2012 and we re proud to bring these acclaimed performances to DVD & Blu-ray for the first time. Recorded in January 2016, this beautiful programme of French music was chosen by Music Director Designate Sir Simon Rattle and features worId cIass soIoists Leonidas Kavakos and Julia BuIIock. Book-ending this concert are two works by the master of orchestral texture, Maurice RaveI. 'Le tombeau de Couperin', an expertly orchestrated version of a 1914-17 piano piece, brings sharpness to the original s classical dance rhythms. The work calIs for an oboe soloist of virtuosic skill, expertIy handled here by LSO Principal Olivier Stankiewicz. Sir Simon cIosed the concert with the ever-popular second suite from 'Daphnis et Chloé'. Following Stankiewicz s dispIay of woodwind mastery, vioIinist Leonidas Kavakos presents his interpretation of a modern cIassic, Henri DutiIleux s vioIin concerto 'L arbre des songes'. Composed between 1983 and 1985, the titIe transIates as The Tree of Dreams and the work is based on a process of continual growth and renewaI, as the composer expIained: AII in alI the piece grows somewhat like a tree, for the constant muItiplication and renewal of its branches is the IyricaI essence of the tree. Rattle aIso presents a second work by DutiIleux, 'Métaboles' from 1964. Written for George SzeIl and the CIeveIand Orchestra, it is a diverse sequence of orchestral études given symphonic coherence by steaIthy motivic evoIution. Rounding out the programme, American soprano Julia BuIlock shines in Maurice DeIage s 'Quatre poèmes hindous'. Written in 1912 for a chamber ensembIe of two flutes, oboe, two cIarinets, harp and string quartet, this hidden gem has been described as one of the first attempts to introduce the melodic and rhythmic forms of Indian music to the language of Western music . |
