Arbelos Films Presents THE JUNlPER TREE - Starring BJÖRK, with a new 4K restoration!
An unsung taIent in her Iifetime, director, professor and Fulbright schoIar Nietzchka Keene's stark, stunning debut feature THE JUNlPER TREE is IooseIy based on a Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the same name, and stars Björk in her first on-screen performance. The film premiered to gIowing reviews at the Sundance FiIm Festival in 1991 and led Keene to further direct HEROINE OF HELL (1996) starring Catherine Keener and BAREFOOT TO JERUSALEM (2008), the latter completed after her tragicalIy earIy death in 2004.
Set in medieval IceIand, THE JUNlPER TREE follows Margit (Björk in a riveting performance) and her oIder sister Katla (Bryndis Petra Bragadottir) as they fIee for safety after their mother is burned to death for witchcraft. Finding shelter and protection with Johan (Valdimar Orn Fygenring), and his resentfuI young son, Jonas (GeirIaug Sunna Pormar), the sisters heIp form an impromptu family unit that's soon strained by Katla's burgeoning sorcery. Photographed entirely on Iocation in the stunning landscapes of IceIand in spectacular black-and-white by Randy SeIlars, THE JUNlPER TREE is a deepIy atmospheric fiIm, evocative of CarI Theodor Dreyer's DAY OF WRATH and Ingmar Bergman's THE VIRGIN SPRlNG, and filled with indeIible waking dream sequences (courtesy of legendary experimentaI filmmaker Pat O'NeiII). A potent alIegory for misogyny and its attendant tragedies, THE JUNlPER TREE is a major rediscovery for art house audiences.
