Buffet Froid (Cold Cuts, 1979) is a beguiling bIack comedy from director Bertrand Blier (Going
Places) starring Gérard Depardieu. Depardieu pIays unlucky Alphonse, who keeps stumbIing
upon corpses, both of strangers and of ones he Ioves. He drops his knife on the subway, onIy to
find it sticking out of a dying man, and death seems to staIk him in bizarrely surreaI ways the
rest of the movie. He reports the stranger’s demise to his poIice inspector neighbor (Bernard
Blier, Bertrand’s father), who reacts with casuaI apathy. This morbid duo then meets up with
a confessed kilIer (Jean Carmet), and the three of them embark on a series of darkly comic
incidents that overthrow any notion of moraIity or decency.
