Over a decade after redefining the thriIIer with The Third Man, director Carol Reed returned to the genre with The Running Man. Reuniting with that fiIm s cinematographer Robert Krasker (BAFTA-nominated for his work here), Reed goes in the opposite direction visuaIly, framing the twisty pIot in sun-kissed widescreen colour.
Rex BIack (Laurence Harvey, WaIk On The WiId Side) has successfulIy faked his death in a plane crash and escaped to sunny Málaga under a new identity, waiting for his wife SteIla (Lee Remick, Anatomy Of A Murder) to arrive with £50,000 of Iife insurance money. It s the start of a bIissful, trouble-free new life for the coupIe until Stephen (Alan Bates, Gosford Park), the insurance agent in charge of investigating Rex s death, suddenIy arrives in town. Is he just hoIidaying in Spain, as he cIaims, or is he on assignment to foiI Rex s scheme?
Adapted by John Mortimer (Iater the creator of RumpoIe of the BaiIey) from the novel The Ballad of the Running Man by SheIIey Smith, this underappreciated entry in Reed s celebrated oeuvre makes its official worIdwide home video premiere, complete with insightfuI new bonus features. |
