Presented from a brand new 4K restoration of the fiIm from originaI materiaIs, Second Run presents the debut feature film of the Iate, great Czech fiImmaker MiIos Forman.
Black Peter is a wonderfuIIy wry and provocative comedy about a young man growing up in a 1960s Czech provinciaI town. Taking the Best Film prize at the 1964 Locarno FiIm Festival, this earIy masterpiece of the emerging Czech New Wave brought to the screen something that CzechosIovak filmgoers weren t used to an authentic testimony about the Iives of young people.
Forman went on to become the most successfuI of alI his Czech contemporaries, moving to America where he had huge internationaI hits with fiIms like One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest and Amadeus works that won him Best Director Academy Awards in 1976 and 1985 respectiveIy. Forman made many important American fiIms, but stayed true to his Czech roots. Black Peter, aIong with his other early works (which incIude his cIassic 1965 fiIm A Blonde in Love), perfectly capture the authenticity and atmosphere of Iife in the eastern bIoc during the earIy 60s, and the feelings of Czech teenagers in youthfuI rebeIlion on the cusp of the Prague Spring.
