Excerpt from The Journal of the Royal Dublin Society, Vol. 6

The fact that, under certain circumstances, and more particularly when heated with any substance capable of a¿'ording oxygen to it, aniline gave rise to colour, was long known; but no one seems to have attempted to fix any of these colours. It was Runge who first noticed the action of chloride of lime upon aniline; and as this was perhaps the earliest experiment in which aniline was seen to give colour, we may repeat it. Here is a solution of a salt of aniline, and you will see that when we add to it a weak solution of chloride of lime, a blue coloration is at once produced. It is important not to add too much of the chloride, for the very agent which produces the colour is most active in destroy ing it. But though a patent has, indeed, been taken out for making a colouring matter in this way, the process has, I believe, been aban doned, as it is not very practicable.
