    Inhalt:
OBSERVATIONS UPON THE TOPOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE - 1898 - INTRODUCTORY REMARKS - THE first edition of my little monograph, upon the climate of Crowborough Hill, having been several years out of print, I have been induced at the requests of many fiiends and correspondents to prepare a second. It has been very gratieing to be able to state, that as a result of the free distribution of the first edition, the main object I had in view, when writing it, has been so successfully accomplished. It may be said that some fifty years ago the district around Crowborough Hill was scarcely known beyond the area of its own immediate neighbourhood. A great transformation has come over the scene, during the last twenty years, as it is now rapidly becoming one of the most favoured health resorts in the South of England nor can this be a matter for surprise when we take into consideration the remarkable purity of the air on the Hill, abounding as it does in ozone and other valuable atmospheric constituents. Another point of value is its considerable elevation above the level of the sea moreover, its actual distance from the coast is only twenty-one miles, which renders it a most conveniently accessible resort for invalids emerging either from London or any of our coast towns. We frequently have a most refreshing breeze from the Channel when the wind current emanates from a B S.E., a S., or S.W. direction and it is found to be absolutely pure and free from the smoke and dust of densely populated towns. Until I came to reside here, in the spring of 1872, the respective conditions of temperature of the locality were wholly unknown but the observations which I then commenced, and have continued to the presenttime, have afforded important information upon this vital subject, much to the surprise of the uninitiated strangers who were ever alluding to the fancied bleak and dreary atmosphere of Crowborough Hill. It is a subject for congratulation to find that its climatic advantages, and splendid position, have become fully recognised by so many eminent members of the medical profession, and especially in a report by a Committee of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society of London upon The Climates and Baths of Great Britain, of which Dr. W. M. Ord is Chairman and Dr. A. E. Garrod, Secretary published by Rlacmillan Co., 1895. By a careful perusal of this valuable work invalids can obtain such information, respecting various health resorts, as will enable them to decide upon one which would appear to satisfy their requirements. Although during the last decade a large number of residences have been, and are being erected at the present moment, yet the number is scarcely sufficient to meet the demand for the class of house more commonly required. Much, of course, depends upon the site, and the amount of land available for annexation to it, but the one desire appears to be that it shall be as near the higher ground as possible. The actual elevation of the Government Stone, above the level of the sea, is 796 feet. Few indeed are the invalids who do not quickly derive benefit from even a short sojourn in the immediate neighbourhood. The very equable temperature of the day and night, and the comparatively high temperature of the latter, is a subject to which I shall particularly allude when treating of the respective tables in reference thereto...
