The Swiss artist Miriam Cahn deals with political and social themes in oil paintings; charcoal, chalk, and colored and lead pencil drawings; and in photographs, films, and installations. Strong color is characteristic of her work, forming a stark contrast to the recurring motifs of violence, tenderness, war, destruction, and physical infirmity. Her habit of commenting upon her work in writing is a golden thread running throughout Cahn's career. MIRIAM CAHN (*1949, Basel) is considered one of the most acclaimed contemporary artists. For over four decades, she has been creating work based on an uncompromising resistance to discrimination in all forms. Influenced by performance art and the feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s, her rich oeuvre includes painting, works on paper, performance, text and film. She lives and works in Stampa, Switzerland. |
