Excerpt from Minutes of the Thirtieth Annual Session of the Johnston Baptist Association: Held With the Saint John Baptist Church, October 14-17, 1915

On the second day of the session of the Johnston Associa tion, held with the St. John Baptist church, Dunn, N. C., the Moderator, Rev. William Ellerbee, was forced to leave for his home. He left the meeting in charge of the vice-modera tor, Rev. W. A. Jones. On the third day morning session the committee on officers submitted their report, which nominated Rev. W. A. Jones for Moderator of the Johnston Association for next-ensuing year. This nomination for Moderator was adopted, and Rev. Jones was declared duly elected Modera tor, but on the afternoon of the same day (third day session) the newly elected Moderator (w. A. Jones) was also forced to leave for his home and he left the meeting in charge of a brother. On the fourth day, morning session, after the min utes of the previous session had been read, upon motion car ried, the election of Moderator was reopened and Rev. Eller bee was placed nomination for Moderator of the Associa tion. Rev. Jones was also placed in nomination for Modera tor. Thus it appeared there were two sides pitted against each other. A spirited discussion followed, and when the body came to vote on the nominees, about two to one cast their vote for Rev. Ellerbee. The acting Moderator declared Rev. Ellerbee elected. It was later said that many of the votes cast for Rev. Ellerbee were not legal delegates. This may be true, and it may be the same thing occurred on both sides. It seems both these worthy brothers feel they are the legal Moderator. The secretary confesses he is badly con fused, desiring to do justice to all parties. He has been asked by many who was the legal Moderator, but could not say; so he is printing in the Minutes the same oficers of the previous year with the hope that hereafter when one is placed in office he will stay on the job. We have no doubt if Rev. Eller bee could have stayed with the meeting he Would have been re - elected, and if Rev. Jones had stayed there would have been no change on his part. H. R. Goodson.
