A much-discussed issue in Ireland at the end of the twentieth century is the growing number of women who decide to be single parents. Reform of the social welfare system is offered by many as a solution - as though the majority of women make this decision for financial gain! God on the Wall tells the story of Elizabeth Wallace. Having grown up in a dysfunctional family, she has no wish to be part of a family again. The novel explores her journey as a working-class woman deciding on single motherhood. It is about family: old and new.
