Excerpt from An Inquiry Into the Life, Writings and Character of the Reverend Doctor William Guild: One of the Chaplains in Ordinary to His Majesty King Charles I, and Founder of the Trinity Hospital, Aberdeen; With Some Strictures Upon Spalding's Account of Him, and of the Times in Which He Lived

A testimony, apparently given under the influence of stubborn prejudice, like that of Spalding, who has endeavoured to blast the reputation of this eminent man, was not much to be trusted. It was not, however, to be peremptorily rejected, without sufficient evidence of its being false. The grounds of bold assertions were to be examined, and facts ascertained beyond a doubt, by recourse to Authentic Records, and to every other source of faithful in formation.

The object I had in view was important, and worth much trouble. It was not merely to gratify curiosity, but to do justice to a character, of some undeniable excellence; and to clear it, from the aspersions of petulant obloquy.
