Excerpt from An Abstract of the Laws of Jamaica Relating to Slaves (From 33 Charles II. To 59 George III. Inclusive): With the Slave Law at Length; Also, an Appendix, Containing an Abstract of the Acts of Parliament Relating to the Abolition of the Slave-Trade

Among the many important amendment; which have been introduced into the slave act, a facility is afforded to testamentary ma; -numissions, by dispensing with'the solemni ties under which the disposition of slaves is required to be made, and declaring that a will which would be valid to.;pass personal estate shall be sufficient for the purpose of conferring freedom. 'on the death of the testay gztor, without waiting until the executor has either made adee'd of manumission, or grant ed the bond required, to be given to the pa Tishfor his maintenance, the slave becomes free, and the estate of the testator is charged Jwith it. The freedom of t'he party is thus established at once, without depending as fore -merly ongthe caprice or negligence of heirs sor executors in signing the necessary papers.
