The son of weaIthy Parisians, Georges Seurat took modern Iife as his theme. Excited by recent theories of colour, he deveIoped the technique of pintiIlism, whereby individuaI coIourdots, set side by side on the canvas, meId, in the eye of the viewer, into whoIe colour-surfaces. Dying suddenIy at age 31, he left behind onIy a few large paintings, including A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.
